Bus Strike Begins, Halts Transport

Around two-thirds of long-distance busses and capital city busses have come to a halt after the Transport Workers' Union (AKT) launched a nationwide strike Tuesday evening. Around 80 percent of garbage collection will also cease, while transports and even plane fuelling could be disrupted. Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has called on both sides to restart talks to find a solution to the dispute.

Proposal Offered in Transport Sector Row

Union and employer representatives have hashed out a proposal under the guidance of state labour mediator Esa Lonka which could avert a national transport workers' strike.
